Ella Baker and the Black Freedom Movement: A Radical Democratic Vision
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (28 April, 2003)
Author: Barbara Ransby
Average review score:

a decisive American life--and a first rate biography
Ella Baker must be the most underrated figure in U.S. history. There are plenty of Presidents who have done less to shape their own times than Ella Baker. She decisively shaped two of the most important national civil rights organizations--the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference--and was the single most decisive figure in a third--the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Only Martin Luther King Jr. can be considered a rival in importance to the African American freedom movement, and yet most Americans have never even heard of Ella Baker. This exhaustively researched and well written biography should go a long way toward filling that gap.

This is a thoughful, analytical, and well-told story about a uniquely important American political life. It is a work of central importance in United States history and especially the history of the African American freedom movement. It is a cutting edge work of black women's history, too. I plan to buy a stack of them for Christmas presents, and to assign this book to my students for many years to come.

Enchanted Crossings
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Love Spell (May, 2000)
Authors: Madeline Baker, Anne Avery, and Kathleen Morgan
Average review score:

Enchanted Crossings
All three authors outdid themselves. Madeline Baker's "Heart of the Hunter" has captured the essence of time and love once again. You won't be able to put this book down until you finish it!

Ann Avery's "Dream Seeker" was astounding! I have never read her work before and would like to read more of it now. She did a wonderful job of combining the depths of space and love. What a romantic!

Kathleen Morgan's "The Last Gatekeeper" was romance at its best, to say the least! This one was extrodinary in the romantic way a world was saved. You won't want to put this book down!

Energy and Environment in Architecture: A Technical Design Guide
Published in Paperback by Routledge mot E F & N Spon (February, 2000)
Authors: Nick Baker and Koen Steemers
Average review score:

A-must-to-read
Architects and environmental engineers should read this book. It gives new research-based information, that is quantitative rather than descriptive. Because architectural research in energy and environment has long suffered from the lack of definitive information, this book is a break through. The work of those two distinguished professors, who teach in Cambridge and affiliated with BRE and CAR, is really unique. The included LT method for British climate is useful only for British applications. Enjoy yourself reading this book.

Ephesians: An Exegetical Commentary (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament)
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (January, 2003)
Author: Harold W. Hoehner
Average review score:

One outstanding commentary!
I purchased Hoehner's commentary on Ephesians with reservation. I knew he'd be a solid, evangelical scholar (he's a distinguished prof at Dallas); I knew this would be a solid, thorough treatment of Ephesians. The thing is over 900 pages long, after all. But I wanted a commentary that would "preach." All too many scholarly commentaries are dry-as-dust, verse-by-verse affairs that frankly don't help a pastor put together a sermon.
This commentary by Dr. Hoehner was a wonderful surprise. Hoehner provides an outline of each unit of text which is built right into his commentary section. And he provides summaries and conclusions which contain the "Big Idea" (or Central Truth, or whatever you prefer to call it)of that unit of text. Why don't more scholars do this in commentaries?
And Dr. Hoehner helps you swim through the Greek like a duck through water; he provides his own translation, and he constantly provides necessary parsing for the reader. But most important of all, he has the best discussion of grammatical categories that I have ever seen, translating a phrase as it would be if it were instrumental, or cause, or sphere, etc., so that you can follow his argument. He lovingly mines the Greek text for everything it can yield, and he actually brings his reader right along with him!
I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this commentary. This is the fruit of an outstanding scholar who has prayed and studied and labored over Ephesians for years.

Ernest Hemingway: Selected Letters 1917-1961
Published in Paperback by MacMillan Publishing Company (October, 1982)
Author: Carlos Baker
Average review score:

As fascinating as any novel or story he wrote...
This collection of letters serves as the closest thing to a Hemingway autobiography we have. It is certainly must reading for the student or researcher, and I would highly recommend it for even the casual Hemingway fan.

Hemingway often wrote letters to either warm up for a day of writing or cool off afterward, and in these letters you see him at his unguarded, intellectual, humorous best. The style of his letter writing is often much freer than the tightly crafted prose style of his fiction...it's almost like watching a classical musician break into some improvisational jazz.

A great book to just dip into wherever you want, and this new edition is long overdue.

Esoteric Anatomy, Part I
Published in Paperback by Baker Publications (01 January, 1976)
Author: Douglas M. Baker
Average review score:

esoteric anatomy, part I
Baker is in a unique position as an authority on esoteric anatomy, being both a medical doctor and one of the world's leading esotericists. Man is the grand symbol of the universe and each body part corresponds to a cosmic counterpart. Of particular interest is the discussion on the Vegas Nerve, the only body part that is truly the devine flesh of the solar petries, and it allows us to communicate directly with the gods!

Esoteric Astrology, Part I
Published in Paperback by Baker Publications (01 January, 1998)
Author: Douglas M. Baker
Average review score:

esoteric astrology
If you only read one book in your lifetime on astrology, this is the one. Baker explains each of the signs and ruling planets better than anyone, giving their true meaning, unlike the supermarket astrology trash. Combine this with his more detailed work, his three volume Dictionary of Astrology for the 21st Century, and you have the complete body of knowledge on astrology, with correct modern interpretations.

Esoteric Astrology, Part IX Intercepted Signs
Published in Paperback by Baker Publications ()
Author: Douglas M. Baker
Average review score:

intercepted signs
Dr. Baker is a master astrologer and when he interprets a chart, one of the first things he looks for is intercepted signs, so they must be important. If you are born in the northern climates, there's a good chance you have intercepted signs in your chart. This work is the most authoritative on the subject.
